Chloe has been tracing horse pictures for years and drawing her own simple versions of them for just as long. But just recently something clicked and the realistic-looking horses came pouring forth from her hands. This is the one she says is her best:
Amazing! We've done no lessons, no prompting, no methods; just given her access to a rich environment that encourages creativity with art. There are several "how-to-draw horses" books in the art corner alongside all the horse books with photos and realistic drawings to look at, and we recently spent an afternoon with three of her horse friends (Jack, Opal and Cowboy). I'm certain that kind of time contributes to her understanding of the shape and musculature of the animal she loves most in a way that books just can't teach. All these things have just been feeding her mind without us even being aware and then..... wow.
(p.s. I never write these posts to brag, but rather to encourage our family and friends who may still have lingering doubts that unschooling can actually work. It's hard to prove learning is happening when so much of it is internal and shows up in conversations here. Whenever a visual tidbit like this presents itself, I use it!)
